Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Gokyo Valley Trek?

The Gokyo Valley Trek is generally considered moderate to challenging. It doesn't involve technical climbing, but the long trekking hours, steep ascents, and high altitude make it physically demanding. Some days require 5 to 7-hour hikes on mountain trails. How comfortable you can complete this trek depends on your stamina, fitness and mental preparedness.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

It is not necessary to have prior trekking experience, but it will be helpful. Even though you have no prior experience, you can complete the trek as long as you maintain a good pace. The body can be prepared for such difficult treks through proper preparation, which involves activities like hiking and light exercise.

What are the food and accommodation like during the trek?

Accommodation is generally in basic mountain lodges or teahouses. Rooms are simple, twin-sharing rooms with limited heating. The food is prepared fresh and includes Nepali, Tibetan and simple international dishes such as dal bhat or noodles. It may not be a luxurious menu, but the food is nutritious and will keep you going during your trek.

Is altitude sickness a risk?

The symptoms of altitude sickness could manifest if you find yourself above 3,000 meters. This is especially true in places like Gokyo and Gokyo Ri. This trip has been planned to prevent this from happening by taking gradual ascents in Namche Bazaar and proper acclimatization. It is crucial that you follow your body's natural signals in staying hydrated and walking at a consistent pace.

What should I expect from the weather?

The weather in the Mount Everest region fluctuates quickly based on the seasons. The weather in low altitudes may seem mild, but in high altitudes, it gets quite cold. In altitudes above 4,000 meters, sudden temperature drops and changes in wind directions can take place within minutes. This is why wearing layered clothes becomes crucial.

Is there drinking water on the trek?

There is drinking water available in most teahouses, lodges and hotels along the trail. It is not advisable to drink untreated water. Purification tablets, filters or boiled water can be purchased from lodges. It is important to stay hydrated at high altitude. Carrying a reusable water bottle and refilling it safely is advised.
